Abstract

This paper synthesizes the findings of three studies on the educational values ​​contained in various fasting practices—Fasting the Dala’il Qur’an, fasting in Ramadan, and fasting as a general Islamic law—all of which were approached using qualitative methods (interviews and literature studies). All three studies agree that fasting does not only function as a ritual worship, but also as an effective vehicle for instilling and strengthening character. The core values ​​that emerge include: (1) religiosity and piety manifested through obedience to worship and reading the Qur’an; (2) independence and integrity, because fasting demands personal commitment, honesty, and consistency; (3) discipline, patience, and self-control, which are built from a regular eating and drinking schedule and restraint of lust; (4) social solidarity and mutual cooperation, born from empathy for the poor and the urge to share; and (5) the physical-spiritual health dimension—bodily detoxification as well as purification of the soul. Thus, fasting is seen as a strategic alternative for strengthening character education outside the realm of formal schools, because it is able to combine the formation of spiritual, moral, social, and physical aspects holistically. This joint finding confirms the position of fasting as an integral Islamic educational instrument for the formation of individuals with noble morals and an empowered society.
