Critical thinking skills are very important for students to be able to solve various problems in an ever-changing life. One of the learning models that can improve these abilities is the KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) model. This study aims to describe the steps, advantages, and disadvantages of KWL model implementation in social studies learning at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Rembang using a qualitative approach. The research subject was social studies teacher, while the data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that the steps of implementing the KWL model include student activities to express opinions, discuss and read the material, record important information, respond critically, and choose questions to deepen understanding. The KWL model has advantages such as improving critical thinking skills, fostering interest in reading, easy to implement without large costs, and encouraging students to have opinions. However, this model requires good teacher skills and supervision and is more beneficial for confident students. In conclusion, the KWL model is effective in improving critical thinking skills in social studies learning at MAN 2 Rembang.
