Abstract

The background of this study stems from calligraphy activities associated with students' ability to understand the translation of Qur'anic verses in calligraphy at the Al-Jauhar Duri Modern Islamic Boarding School in Riau. Calligraphy is one of the extracurricular activities that is closely related to formal subjects, especially the translation of the Qur'an. Through this activity, students are not only trained in the skill of writing Qur'anic verses aesthetically, but are also guided to understand the meaning and translation of the verses expressed in the form of calligraphy. Students at the Al-Jauhar Modern Islamic Boarding School have various typologies in understanding the translation of calligraphic verses, because the process of writing calligraphy not only requires accuracy in writing, but also an understanding of the content of the Qur'anic verses. This research is field research using a descriptive qualitative method through the Living Qur'an approach, which aims to describe the phenomenon of students' understanding of Qur'anic verses in calligraphic art. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study show that santri find it easier to understand the translation of verses in manuscript calligraphy, while in contemporary calligraphy, their understanding tends to be more limited.
