Abstract

This study aims to investigate how to use of mother tongue in learning can impact students’ attitudes in learning Javanese, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors at SD Negeri 1 Lumajang Watumalang. This field research collected data through observation, interviews, and documentation. The result shows that consistent use of the mother tongue in Javanese language learning helps students understand the material more easily. Moreover, teachers play a role not only as instructors in the classroom but also as mentors in the school environment, fostering a habit of using the mother tongue between students and teachers. However, this is not without challenges. To preserve the mother tongue, there needs to be continuity between the roles of teachers and parents in interacting with students in the mother tongue.
