The phenomenon of “together but apart” describes a condition in which a married couple lives under the same roof yet loses the emotional intimacy, communication, and affection that form the essence of marriage. This study explores how religious, legal, and psychological perspectives interpret and offer solutions to marital relationships that lack emotional closeness. The discussion focuses on Islamic teachings that regard marriage as an act of worship aimed at achieving tranquility, love, and compassion; on Indonesian positive law that regulates the rights and obligations of spouses; and on psychological insights into the mental health effects of emotionally distant relationships on both partners and children. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method using a library research approach, analyzing religious literature, legal regulations, and relevant psychological studies. The findings indicate that, from an Islamic perspective, the loss of sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah values signifies a disruption of the spiritual balance within the household. Legally, separation without valid reasons can be categorized as emotional neglect and may serve as a legitimate ground for divorce under Law Number 1 of 1974. Psychologically, a cold and distant relationship may lead to stress, depression, and emotional disturbances in children’s development. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach combining religious, legal, and psychological frameworks is essential to restore marital harmony and achieve the true purpose of marriage.
