Abstract. The rapid population growth in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) over the past two decades has significantly increased public reliance on mass transportation, particularly the Commuter Line (KRL) electric trains. With nearly one million daily passengers, especially during peak hours, extreme overcrowding in train cars has led to considerable physical discomfort and mental stress. This article explores the psychological impact of KRL overcapacity through the lens of Lazarus and Folkman’s stress theory and related studies on quality of life. Emotional tension, disrupted social interactions, and the potential development of mental health disorders are identified as critical consequences. The study highlights the need for a multidimensional approach in public transportation planning, advocating for the integration of mental health indicators in service evaluation, human-centered policies, and active involvement from both authorities and commuters.
